We do not sell any hardware, but will cover some points on networking.
For networking inside a company, ask the network administrator. If you are the network
administrator and need some help, contact us.
If you want to connect one or more computers at home to the Internet or to each
other, you will need some or all of the following.
- Network ports on all related computers (newer computer all come with them, mostly
installed as part of the main board). For computers without a network card, you
will need to purchase this separately.
- A router with four or more ports, depending on the number of computers you want
to link up. A network switch can also be used, although a router has the advantage
here.
- For wireless networking (most laptops have this built in), you will need a wireless
router. Most wireless routers have four or more wired ports too.
- Network cables for non-wireless computers (carried nearly everywhere).
- Connecting to the Internet requires a link-up provider. You can connect using a
cable provider, satellite provider, wireless (cellular) provider, DSL, or modem
(dial-up). Your Internet connection and speed is determined by your location.
- For locations not covered by DSL or Cable, try Cellular or Satellite. Connecting
via typical dial-up will be the slowest.
- Connecting two or more computers can be done in more than one way, but using a switch
or router is preferred due to speed and accessibility of individual devices connected
to those computers (printers, faxes, scanners, etc).
